Western Digital launches a line of NAS devices
Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at 10:52AM Western Digital has decided to get into the NAS market along with the likes of Drobo and Buffalo. Pricing is $999 for a 4 TB and $699 for a 2 TB.
This unit is an actual NAS like the Terastations from Buffalo so there is ample performance to be had across the network in your house or office. This is what I like to see on these kinds of devices. Either networed or it had better have an E-SATA connector.
The Drobo(2) is a USB or Firewire connected device and only offers network connectivity if you also buy a Drobo Share. The total price for doing that is $700 and you still need to add drives to the Drobo!!! Don’t get me totally wrong. The Drobo is a nice unit that makes storage expansion easy for the average person but the cost is just too high for all that you get.
If Western Digital were to sell the chassis only for say $500, then they would have a serious contender on their hands. I, for one, would rather spend $500 on the chassis from WD than build a PC to hold the drives. There is just so much less frigging when you use an appliance like this than using a PC.
