Seagate SD15 Firmware based drives...

Not that this is any surprise but the SD15 firmware is crap.  And not just crap on the 1.0 and 1.5 TB drives.  All of the 500 GB drive are also crap.  I had to replace 3 SD15 drives in the last 3 months.  Twice in the last 6 weeks.

On the upside, they were replaced under warranty from Seagate with a new updated firmware series of 7200.11.

But at the end of the day, I am now once bitten bigtime on this.  The next drives I get will be back to Hitachi, Samsung or Western Digital.

The tale of Dying Drives and Free Space...

Updated on Monday, March 30, 2009 at 8:51PM by Registered CommenterJason Price

Well, my new Seagate 500 GB drive overheated and almost failed totally after only 8 days of use.  The RMA is under way but there is one thing that I have now truly realized is a big deal…

WHS is Alive and Well!!!

Well, after over a week of building, transferring of data and some unexpected troubleshooting, I am finally “done”.  The WHS server is up and running and it is ever so nice to have everything in one place.  BTW, I say “done” because nothing in my world is ever DONE.  I will change or upgrade this thing for no reason at all in less than a year even if I tell myself I will not.  It is just me.

Off Site Backups...

Well, the subject that after years, I myself, have still not addressed.  No more.  As I am getting ready to build a Windows Home Server again, I need to seriously address the lack of offsites.

The question: Why a server at home?

People ask this question of me as I generally have a server setup already.  It is from my IT background.  A server is a must have when there is a fair amount of data and multiple PCs/laptops.  And at this point people ask why I say that it is a must have.

Time again to try Windows Home Server...

So way back when Windows Home Server was first released, I gave it a trial run and was fairly impressed.  Not long after, however, I and many others were sadly disappointed by a major flaw that caused one to lose data on the server.  Well that has been patched up for some time now and my “little” home network needs are now at a point where I need to look into this once more.

Sony 16GB USB Key

Well, my 8 GB Kingston Datatraveller was getting too flaky lately so I hunted about on the internets today…

I found a wonderful deal!!! Future Shop (Best Buy owns them) had the Sony 16GB MicroVault (USM16GJE) on sale for only $39. It was marked down $50. I don’t usually buy Sony because of the price but this was a great deal. When I looked at NewEgg and such, the shipping was more than enough to make the $39 +tax a terrific deal.

Another NAS for MASS Storage...

Tech5 and Digital Home Canada are reporting on a new NAS from Iomega, the people that gave us the ZIPDisk.

The 1 TB unit costs $299 and a 2 TB unit will cost $479.  Given the prices of the individual drives, these prices are just too steep.  NewEgg is now selling the Western Digital 1 TB drive for only $130 or less and the 1.5 TB drives are now below $200 in either Canada or the US.  And the 500 GB drives that are in the 1 TB NAS are only $50-$60 a piece.

Storage, Storage, Storage

Although Seagate announced their new 1.5 TB drive back in July, availability has only just kicked in over the last couple of weeks.
